La Orotava is one of those places that captivate you at first sight. If you're planning a trip to Tenerife, follow our guide to discover the most beautiful corners of this historic town.

What to See in La Orotava: History, Culture and Family Plans

Visiting La Orotava means stepping into one of the most charming and historically rich towns in Tenerife. Its old town feels like a journey back in time, with colonial architecture, intricately carved wooden balconies, and cobbled streets that breathe tradition and local culture.

Beyond its heritage, La Orotava is surrounded by spectacular natural landscapes: forests, viewpoints, hiking trails and peaceful spots perfect for those looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. It’s the ideal place to escape the urban rush and experience one of the island’s most authentic and serene regions.

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan your visit and discover what to see in La Orotava, with recommendations for every interest—culture, nature, gastronomy and family-friendly activities.

How to get to La Orotava, northern Tenerife

If you’re enjoying your holiday in the south of the island—whether staying at Kora Nivaria Beach or in areas such as Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje—and you’d like to discover the most authentic side of northern Tenerife, La Orotava is a must-see stop. Here’s how to get there easily, either by car or by guagua (bus).

Driving to La Orotava

The fastest and most convenient way to reach La Orotava from the south is by car. From areas such as KNB, Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje, take the TF-1 motorway towards Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Once you reach the capital, switch to the TF-5 motorway towards Puerto de la Cruz and continue until exit 32, which takes you directly to La Orotava.

The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, although this may vary depending on traffic. Please note that if your visit includes a stop at Teide National Park, an eco-tax will be introduced from 2026 to access the summit, with a cost of up to €25 for non-resident visitors.

Getting to La Orotava by guagua (bus)

If you prefer public transport, there are also good options available. Bus lines 343 and 345 connect southern Tenerife with the north, including stops in Puerto de la Cruz, where you can transfer to local buses that take you directly to the centre of La Orotava.

The full journey by guagua can take between 2 and 2.5 hours, depending on connections and schedules. It’s a great alternative if you don’t want to worry about parking or simply feel like enjoying the scenery without driving.
